Having Faith

Theme: Having faith
Scripture: Hebrews 11:1
Props: A bird book (optional)

Do you know what a whip-o-will is? It’s a kind of bird that lives in the forest. (Show picture, if you have one.) But the whip-o-will is a little different from other birds. You see, most birds sing in the daytime when the sun is out, but the whip-o-will sings at night.

But that wasn’t always the case. Many years ago he used to sing in the daytime like the other birds. But one night – after midnight – he decided to sing. He sang softly at first, then a little louder. Finally he was singing at full volume.

As you can imagine, this woke up all the other birds. They opened their sleepy eyes and yawned, and when they looked up at the sky, were they confused! It was still dark!

So they said to the whip-o-will, “The sun’s not out. What are you singing about?”

The whip-o-will said, “The sun may not be out, but I know it’s going to be. I have faith!”

It’s almost like that whip-o-will had been reading the Bible! Let me read you what Paul said about faith. Hebrews 11:1 says, “Faith…is being sure of what we do not see.”

Even though he couldn’t see it, that whip-o-will had faith that the sun would come up in the morning.

And even though we can’t see Jesus, we have faith that He’s there and that He’ll return some day. And just like that bird, we don’t have to wait until He returns to rejoice. We can rejoice and be thankful now – because we have faith.

So if you ever wake up before the sun comes up and you hear a bird outside your window singing away, remember: he’s just showing his faith – and so should we.

Let’s pray about that: Heavenly Father, thank you for giving us faith in Your Son, Jesus. We pray that our faith will grow every day. We thank You in His holy name. Amen.

Activities To Do After The Lesson

1. Faith Fall Activity

Talk about Faith before the activity.
You may start with this as an introduction of the activity:

Can you see Faith? No, because it’s invisible. So how do we explain it?

Faith is defined as “complete trust or confidence in something or someone”. When the Bible talks about faith in God it means that we have put all our confidence and hope in Him. The power of faith is that we obey even when we cannot see the end. We have to act and believe that God will take care of us, even though we can’t see what He’s up to or where He is taking us.

Will you put your faith in the person at your back even if you cannot see him by letting your full weight fall.

In the Faith Fall activity, one person has to fall on purpose while the other has to catch him.

Step 1: Let your kid stand with another partner in an opposite direction.

Step 2: One of the partners has to stand in front of the other and make his body go stiff. He has to give a signal that he is about to fall backwards.

Step 3: As the kid falls, the partner has to catch him gently and prevent him from hitting the ground.

The activity begins with less distance between the partners. As the levels increase and the partners start trusting each other, the distance increases with each level.

Question:
Did you have second thoughts in this falling activity? How did you feel? Were you scared?

The power of faith is that we obey even when we cannot see the end. We have to act and believe that God will take care of us, even though we can’t see what He’s up to or where He is taking us.

2. Have a printout of this activity and let your kids answer.

3. You can also have your kids create their own poster about faith like this:
